Spice World Celebrates Garlic Day 2024 With Fun Garlic Facts and Garlic Products to Make Meal Prep Easier

To celebrate National Garlic Day, Spice World offers a few fun facts about garlic:

  • In 2023, Americans bought approximately 107.1 million pounds of garlic cloves totaling approximately 1.71 billion bulbs.
  • Garlic cloves generally measure 1.5” in diameter, so if you placed all the bulbs bought in the United States side by side, it would cross the United States nearly 10 times or circle the earth!
  • Garlic was discovered as early as 2000 BC and has been enjoyed ever since for its culinary, medicinal, and folkloric use.
  • California is the leading producer of garlic in the United States, responsible for 400 million pounds of garlic.
  • Garlic is high in antioxidants manganese, selenium, vitamin C and B6. It has been shown to lower total cholesterol1, reduce blood pressure2, and reduce the severity of the common cold3.
  • Cloves of garlic were discovered in the tomb of King Tut.
  • In folklore, garlic was believed to ward off evil spirits. In primeval times, people wore garlic around their necks and smeared it on their foreheads to repel spirits.

Spice World Organic Offerings Meet Consumer Demand for Global Cuisine

Spice World’s broad variety of fresh and ready-to-use garlic, onion and ginger offerings meet consumers’ continued demands for innovative flavors in their meals. At Expo West 2024, Spice World will highlight the versatility of its organic offerings with recipes featuring Asian, Middle Eastern and Caribbean cuisine among others.

According to the Organic Produce Network, sales of organic produce topped $9.4 billion in 2022, up 3% over 2021. Neilsen data further shows organic produce sales in 2023 increased 2% over 2022.  Spice World’s organic garlic pairs well with consumers desire for global cuisines — notably Japanese, Korean, Thai, Greek and Middle Eastern cuisines1 – as these cuisines prominently feature garlic.

“During the pandemic, the global flavor trend exploded as consumers at home sought to experience adventure through their cuisine choices,” said Chris Kiser, CEO of Spice World. “Our organic products work in a wide variety of cuisines, especially Asian and Latin cuisines that combine a panorama of spices and flavors for dishes with gusto.”

Many consumers also take a hybrid approach to meal prep by combining scratch and ready-to-use items in their recipes. Taste of Home magazine surveyed more than 4,000 people over age 18 in 2022 to see how eating habits changed since 2020 and found that 60% cook at home more than five days a week and that 53% of consumers want ways to make meal prep easier.2

Garlic Maple Sausage

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lb pork sausage
  • 1 tsp Spice World Organic Garlic, finely minced
  • 1 Tbsp Spice World Organic Shallot, finely minced
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 2 Tbsp maple syrup

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • In a large mixing bowl, add in your sausage alongside spices and syrup. Mix evenly.
  • Add a small amount of your mix added into a sauté pan over medium heat.
  • When done, roll into balls, about a quarter inch and cook on medium heat until done. Enjoy!

Garlic, Turmeric, Pineapple, Banana Smoothie

INGREDIENTS

  • Spice World Organic Minced Garlic to taste
  • Turmeric to taste
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • Honey to taste

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Mix all ingredients in blender, blend until smooth.

Coconut, Garlic & Onion, Chicken Curry over Rice

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Tbsp Spice World Organic Minced Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Spice World Easy Onion
  • Cumin to taste
  • Turmeric to taste
  • Curry powder to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Ancho powder to taste
  • 2 cups coconut milk
  • 8 oz chicken breast, thinly sliced or cubed
  • 1 cup rice

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Season chicken with dry ingredients.
  • On medium heat stove, add in either a small amount of butter or oil (enough to just coat the pan).
  • Let sit for 1 minute before adding in chicken.
  • Cook for 7 minutes. Chicken will not be done yet.
  • Add in coconut milk to pan, let reduce down for 8 minutes until you have a thicker liquid.
  • Drizzle over chicken and rice.

Garlic, Shallot Hummus w/Feta & Arugula Oil over Crisp

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Tbsp Spice World Organic Minced Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp onion, minced
  • Juice from 2 lemons
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 5 cups chickpea
  • 6 oz tahini
  • 4 oz olive oil

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Soak chickpeas overnight in water, just enough to cover.
  • Cover with plastic wrap or a lid. Strain afterwards.
  • In the bowl of a food processor, combine the tahini and lemon juice and process for 1 minute.
  • Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl, then pulse again.
  • Add the olive oil, minced garlic, cumin, and salt (to taste) to the whipped tahini and lemon juice.
  • Add half the chickpea mixture. Process thoroughly.

If you have some leftover chickpea bits or it is too thick, just add in a dab of water until you get that perfect consistency.

Feta & Arugula Oil

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 oz Feta block
  • 8 oz Arugula
  • 6 oz spinach
  • 10 oz olive oil
  • Boiling water
  • 1 bowl filled with ice

 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • In a pot of boiling water, add in arugula & spinach for about 3-4 seconds.
  • Take out and place into your ice bath immediately to stop the cooking process.
  • Strain out arugula when it is no longer warm. Try to take out as much of the liquid as possible.
  • In processor, add in greens. Cover the greens with oil and pulse for 30 seconds.
  • Strain oil mixture over cheesecloth in a dark area and let sit about 1 hour until completely strained. Serve!

Shallot, Garlic and Tomato Cream Cheese Spread over Bagel

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tsp Spice World Organic Shallot
  • 1 tsp Spice World Organic Minced Garlic
  • 4 basil leaves
  • 3 Roma tomatoes, blistered in oven (400° for 15-20 min)
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 8 oz cream cheese

INSTRUCTIONS

Take all the ingredients from above and pulse in processor until smooth. Serve over your favorite bagel!

 

Ginger, Peach, Blueberry or Garlic, Spinach & Apples Smoothie

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tsp Spice World Organic Minced Garlic
  • 1 tsp Spice World Minced Ginger
  • 1 cup blueberry
  • 4 oz peach (frozen)
  • 5 apple (any kind, but granny smith preferred)
  • 2 cups spinach
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • Honey to taste
  • 2 cups Oat milk (or your favorite milk)

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Assemble all ingredients in your processor and pulse until desired consistency. Enjoy!

Sweet Olive, Garlic & Onion Tapenade, Fontina Cheese with Crisp

Makes 1 quart

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tsp Spice World Organic Minced Garlic
  • 1 tsp Spice World Easy Onion
  • 1 cup pitted cerignola olive
  • 1 cup pitted kalamata olive (small dice)
  • 6 oz fontina, cubed (small dice)
  • 1 cup tomato paste
  • 1 cup eggplant (small dice)
  • Honey to taste
  • 5 oz olive oil

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Sauté garlic and onion for 2 minutes on medium heat until lightly browned.
  • Add in eggplant and tomato paste. Cook for 3 minutes.
  • Add in everything else except the fontina cheese and reduce down until it forms a paste.
  • Add fontina and serve over crisp.

Lentil, Ginger, Garlic & Shallot, Parsley and Crumbled Feta Stew

Makes 1 quart

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 cups lentil
  • 7 cups water
  • 2 tsp Spice World Organic Minced Garlic
  • 1 Tbsp Spice World Easy Onion
  • 1 tsp Spice World Minced Ginger
  • 1 bunch parsley, chopped
  • 2 cups feta, crumbled
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp cumin
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Add all lentils into a stock pot and bring to a boil for 5 minutes and let simmer.
  • If you need to add more water, just add enough to cover the lentils.
  • Add in remaining ingredients besides feta and let simmer until your lentils are tender. They should not be tough to the tooth. Season to taste!
