Delicious Mocktails for a Dry January

Have you ever heard of a mocktail? Similar to cocktails, mocktails are a rendition of your favorite drinks but without alcohol. Mocktails are the perfect non-alcoholic drink to make for all your social gatherings or nights in, and the best part is that you don’t have to wake up in the morning feeling sluggish! If you are considering transitioning from cocktails to mocktails, January is a great time to start. During January, people around the world participate in a public health campaign called Dry January. This campaign encourages people to abstain from consuming alcohol all month long. Some benefits you could experience from joining the challenge include an increase in hydration, higher energy levels, and weight loss.

If the health benefits from cutting out alcohol have not convinced you yet to participate in Dry January, then maybe the health benefits from consuming mocktails will. Many mocktail recipes include ginger, onion, or garlic ingredients for an added boost of flavor AND health benefits. It has been shown that ginger can improve digestion and immunity, onions can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, and garlic can reduce high blood pressure.

While you may shudder at the thought of onions in any kind of drink, this mocktail may be a surprise favorite. With potato, olive, and onion flavors, this is certainly a unique drink that you need to try at least once. Just like not judging a book by its cover, don’t judge a mocktail by its name. You will notice that this recipe calls for potato water. Because potatoes are used to make traditional vodka, potato water is a great substitute for mocktails.

Directions for the Onion Syrup:

For this recipe, the onions need to be turned into a syrup. To do that follow these instructions:

  • Add your water, Spice World’s Easy Onion, and a dash of salt to a pot.
  • Allow the ingredients to simmer for around 50-60 minutes.
  • Remove from heat for about 30 minutes.
  • Once cooled, combine with your white sugar and you now have onion syrup.

Directions for the Non-Alcoholic Gibson:

  • Cut the skin off of three potatoes and toss in a pan. Add in water until all the potatoes are submerged.
  • Boil the potatoes until they become nice and soft.
  • Remove from heat and save about 10z of the water. Store it in a glass container.
  • Pour about 2-3 ounces of the potato water into a shaker. Then add ice, green olive juice, and 1 tbsp of onion syrup.
  • Shake until frosty, strain into a glass, and enjoy!
