Ginger 101

It should come as no surprise that we’re garlic’s #1 fan, but we also want to show some love for ginger! It’s a cooking staple, like garlic, and is simple to work with while offering a major flavor payoff. If you’re interested in finding more uses for this spicy root, here are some tips and tricks we recommend!

Ginger 101

Know what you’re looking for — The best ginger root in stores will have smooth skin. Any blemishes or wrinkles on the skin means the ginger root is past its prime. Another way to tell if a certain piece of ginger should come home with you is to smell it. We promise you won’t get any weird looks from fellow shoppers! If there’s a classic ginger aroma wafting through your nostrils, you’ve found your ginger.

Ginger is a versatile store-er — If you plan to use your ginger often, you can keep it in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks. Just make sure you peel the skin, wrap it in plastic wrap, foil, or a Ziploc, and place it in the crisper drawer. If you’re planning on being more of a sparing user of your ginger, you can freeze the root and when you’re ready to use it, just take it out and grate it, no thawing necessary! Of course, if prepping ginger is not your thing but you’d still like to have it on hand, Spice World Minced Ginger and Squeezable Ginger are the way to go.

Ginger doesn’t have to stay in the kitchen — While it makes an amazing addition to many savory and sweet dishes, ginger also has many uses outside the kitchen. Like garlic, it has many benefits, as well as handy DIY tricks and life-hacks. Bad breath? Ginger tea can help with that. Dealing with dry skin? Ginger is an energizing addition to any DIY body scrub. Want your home to smell better? Use some ginger essential oil in potpourri or a diffuser and enjoy the zesty scent.

Have we convinced you that ginger is worth the buy? Take it to social media and let us know if you have a favorite tip or trick!
